It’s great for students who know how to play chess but are not quite ready for officially rated tournament games.
Chess sets and chess clocks that meet the standards of tournament play will be used for these games (please bring them if you have them).
Games in this section are unrated. This means they are a little more casual. It also means that players DO NOT have to be members of the United States Chess Federation.
Players are still expected to try their best to follow the official rules of chess. If, however, a player makes an illegal move, it will be corrected without penalty.
For these elementary students it is required that one (and only one) spectator sit next to their child during games.
This spectator can be a parent, a grandparent, an older sibling, etc.
It should be someone who can help the player control their behavior and point out illegal moves that happen during the game.
After reading the spectator Dos and Don’ts, we encourage the designated spectator to watch the following videos to help familiarize yourself with things to look out for during the game.
